What is it?

Imperialism : the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies.

What caused Imperialism?
  • Economic Motives
    • People wanted raw materials and new markets fast
  • Nationalism
    • The nations of Europe wanted to show their power to the world
  • Balance of Power
    • The nations also wanted to gain more colonies to get a balanced power with other nations of the world.
  • White Man's Burden
    • Because the Europeans were white they felt that they were superior to the "savages" they found in the African colonies.

How did it effect us?
Imperialism began in the 19th century and continued on into the early 20th century. The overall effect from this was more negative than positive. Although the majority of the efffects were negative, there were some positive effects.

What were the positive effects?
  • "Modern Progressive Nations" shows that the bigger nations gave to smaller colonies during imperialism. They helped these cultures by showing them improved modern techonology. Such as roads, canals, railways, telegraph, newspapers, and schools.
  • "Colonial Governments and Missionaries" shows that colonial governments giving the colonies new and improved medicial care and improved sanitation. Also along with medicial improvements they introduced better means of farming leading to an increase in the amount of food being offered.

These two documents together worked to improved the colonies, which lead them to less death and more production.

What were the negative effects?

  • "Colonization" shows that the nations did not do most of the hard work like they took credit for, instead it was all the smaller colonies doing all the hard labor. They had no choice but to listen to the nation and work as "cheap labor".
  • "Missionaries" shows that white men had complete power and control over the people and forced them into the religion of Christianity.
  • "The White Man" shows that the men who came into the colonies killed innocent people. If they were not killed their freedom was taken and they were forced into slavery.
